I wear a lot of hats on any given day. I’m an artist and designer and owner of two (soon to be three) businesses. I am married with three gorgeous girls ages 11, 9 and 4, none of whom ever stop talking. Ever. Seriously. We have an assortment of creatures including Waffles the Pug, a couple of cats, two increasingly giant guinea pigs and some sort of lizardy thing called Sticky Ninja. Sometimes us grown ups like to pretend that we’re in charge, but everyone knows that the preschooler is the boss of the house.
Since 2001, we have moved from Edinburgh, Scotland, to small town Wisconsin, USA, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Auckland, New Zealand and finally to Portland, Maine, USA. I think we’re done with moving. I think we’re going to stay very still now and put down some roots.
I make large scale artwork collaboratively with my husband, and have been doing so since 1999. We approach making art in a very logical and pragmatic fashion. We have an idea, we discuss every aspect of it and study all the elements from the big picture to the tiniest detail. If it is a good idea, we design and plan how to make it great, and then we make it.
I teach art in the same way. The idea is at the heart of everything. Figuring out how to make your idea real involves finding the right tools, processes and approaches to make the reality as important as the idea.
I take the same approach to building businesses. In 2014, I had one month to create a successful viable business, otherwise I would have to take my MA and my MFA and my six years as an online entrepreneur to go and stack some shelves.
I thought. I planned. I did it. Equilateral Design Studio launched as a web design studio, focusing on bringing to life the dreams creative entrepreneurs had for their online presence. It didn’t take long for me to realize that website design and branding are just some of the tools that I can offer to help people bring their dreams to life.
I found myself working with clients to look at the bigger picture of their vision and the smaller details of their brand, bringing their ideas to action through a designed experience. I came to realize, that this perspective is my thing, and that making gorgeous websites is just one small part of what I offer the world. In May 2016 I decided to rebrand under the name IDEAS + DESIGN + ACTION, partly because it is at the heart of what I do, and partly because I pronounce Equilateral differently to absolutely everyone I know here in America.
I help peeps with a dream keep moving through the process of ideas – design – action, without getting stuck in one area and sabotaging the whole project.
